Modern Arnis De Mano: |
| |
To truly understand the empty-hand system of
martial arts taught at Islander’s Karate, one must understand the
background from where it came. This empty hand system was born
from the culmination of the studies of the head instructor at
Islander’s. Master Ken Smith has been training in the marital
arts all of his adult life. He has a background in wrestling and
hold master’s level rank in three styles of martial arts: two
from Okinawan Karate and a Filipino style called Modern Arnis.
Modern Arnis was created by Grandmaster Remy A. Presas. The art
of Modern Arnis encompasses a vast amount of knowledge and
various techniques to create an extremely well-rounded and
versatile art. Master Smith took the empty-hand techniques from
Modern Arnis, mixed it with this Okinawan Karate techniques and
added in the pressure point application; thus, the style of
Modern Arnis De Mano was born.
Master Smith still considers Modern Arnis De Mano to fall under
the umbrella of Modern Arnis. Approximately 80% of the
techniques are Modern Arnis based and are executed like
Professor Presas taught. However, because it has its own mix of
different techniques and teaching, Master Ken Smith chose to
call it Modern Arnis De Mano which means Modern Arnis of the
hand. The style encompasses all kinds of techniques: escapes,
chokes, throws, kicks, punches, ground grappling, join locks and
extensive pressure point applications. All of these aspects
combined create and extremely effective and complete system of
self-defense.

| Adult Class: |
| |
We are fortunate enough to have an established
adult class with hardworking, disciplined and enthusiastic
students. Many of these students have higher ranks which enable
them to share skills and knowledge with new students. In the
adult class, Sensei Ken offers a unique blend of self-defense,
incorporating Modern Arnis, Modern Arnis De Mano, pressure
points, ground-fighting, Ju Jitsu and other aspects of the
martial arts to offer a well-rounded, self defense program.
Our adult students are a diverse group, consisting of a variety
of ages and occupations: college students, business owners,
stay-at-home parents, etc. No one is ever too old, too clumsy or
too out of shape to begin the study of karate.
We at Islander’s know that adults want to learn karate for a
variety of reasons. Some want to learn self-defense so they can
protect themselves and their families. Others want the
combination of learning karate and getting into shape. For many,
to relieve stress from a long day at work or a break from the
kids is crucial. Whatever the reason, Islander’s is sure to meet
those needs. |
